Paul wrote to the Galatians because their faith was threatened by false teachers who said that salvation was dependent upon both Christ and works. This false gospel, Paul wrote, was “no gospel at all.” Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians while he was a prisoner and reminded them of what God’s great power and grace has done for believers.

Rather, they asserted that the way to receive the benefits of this Christ was through the time-honored method of joining God’s covenant people, that is, by becoming “proselytes,” converts to Judaism. Thus they urged the Galatians to believe in Christ and keep the Old Testament ceremonies. That people would teach such a hybrid religion is not a product of our imaginations.
